Salary Information: $107,742-$144,385 per year. Description:  

The Public Works Director oversees all aspects of the city’s infrastructure and essential services, including engineering, water, sewer, stormwater, streets, facilities, and equipment maintenance. This role requires a balance of technical acumen and strategic vision. The Director leads a team of skilled professionals, develops and manages budgets, ensures compliance with state and federal standards, and represents the department at public meetings and intergovernmental collaborations. This position also serves as a trusted advisor to city leadership, providing data-driven insight and fostering innovation in public works operations.

Reporting to the City Manager, the Public Works Director is a highly responsible executive level position and a key contributor to the City’s management team. The Public Works Director performs complex managerial and professional work in planning, organizing, directing, and overseeing the operations of Independence Public Works department to maintain the quality and safety of the City’s infrastructure and to deliver associated programs and services reliably, efficiently, and cost-effectively. The director provides leadership and strategic direction to the department, coordinates activities with other departments and outside agencies, and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager.
